We’ve all been there. Your morning coffee is looking especially artistic, or you’re looking at an amazing view, or your kid does something especially cute, and you just want to capture that moment, so you can look back on it later. You whip out your phone, and snap a photo. You take a look at the result. Aaaaand it sucks. The picture contains none of the charm of the original. It looks boring and flat. Well, like I said, it happens to all of us. To help you out, we’ve compiled a short list of 3 ways to stop taking boring photos.

1.Find a New Angle

It may just be that a picture looks boring because of the angle at which you are taking it. Try spicing things up a bit by taking a different viewpoint. ‘Shooting from the hip’ is a technique often used by photographers, which just means lowering your camera a little to produce a more interesting result.  This works especially well when taking photos of people, because it is more flattering. Alternatively, when taking pictures like that of the building above, go for a really low angle to emphasize the enormous height of the object.

2.Lighting is key

You don’t always have many options, lighting-wise, but when you do, always take into account the direction of light and whether you are using natural or artificial light. Natural light is always more flattering, so whether you’re taking a quick selfie, or snapping a shot of your new Cath Kidston mugs, remember to head outside (or to the nearest window!).

3.Get up close and personal

Sometimes, the problem is simply that you are too far away from your subject for it to stand out. It’s surrounded by so much other stuff, that the resulting shot looks confused and messy. The eye doesn’t know what to focus on. If you zoom in closer, that problem disappears!

And there you have it! 3 easy ways to get your photos looking better than ever! Now go forth and get snapping!
